Christina Oyawale is a byproduct of the internet, a hierarchy averse self-proclaimed “anarchist punk boy”.

Their obsessive nostalgia for 2010s blogosphere culture takes shape in their practice as a lens-based artist, writer, designer and curator. Set to the backdrop of now defunct Rookie Magazine, the failures of Occupy Wall Street, and midwest emo bands, Oyawale’s wide ranging interest in popular culture and politics is self-evident. Subconsciously reflected in their work as an amalgamation of images, archives, memories, cultural critique and longing for a post-digital connective space.

Oyawale holds a BFA in Photography from Image Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University and is pursuing their MFA at the University of Manitoba. They are attempting to break free from the expected and frequent uses of identity politics under our current neo-liberalist society, that requires marginalized people to sell their identity in exchange for “visibility” within academia. Their current research interests and musings surround: Social Reproduction Theory, Relationship Anarchy, 1970s left-wing guerilla militant groups and Black feminist disability theory. Oyawale is an anarcho-communist but isn’t weird about it.

I acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. I would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario for their support.
